The annual Maureen Burr Tournament, traditionally marking the start of the tennis
season, was played on Sunday April 8th 2018. It was especially poignant this year
as Maureen had recently passed away so a record number of members turned out either
to play or to mark the occasion with the minute’s silence we held at the start. Mike
organised the tournament and it was he who spoke movingly about Maureen’s involvement
with the club over so many years. He was able to read a letter she wrote to the Hon
Sec after the first tournament was played, in which she said how embarrassed she
had been to win this first one but it was due to her partner, not her! We then held
the minute’s silence before starting.
Sadly, the weather was not kind and we played in a slight drizzle all day. Mike
shortened it to 4 games at a time and the final was played before the magnificent
lunch was enjoyed, thanks to all those members who brought down plates of food.
The runners up in a very exciting Final were Steve Whiting and Nikki Lloyd, and the
winners were Tom Oliver and Vanessa Douglas. Congratulations to all of them, thanks
to all those who took part and an especial thanks to Mike for organising the tournament
